age 28; entered service March 29, 1917; Albert Adamson, brother, Chicago, Ill; served in 2nd Montana Inf., later 163rd U.S. Inf. 41st Div. Transferred to 16th Inf. 1st Div., A. E. F. Served with former at Helena, Butte, Montana, Camp Mills and France. With later at Toul front, battle of Cantigny, second battle of Argonne; disharged March 28, 1919 at Fort Russell, Wyoming; private. Wounded in right shoulder and slightly gassed at second battle of Marne. Returned to the front to take part in St Mihiel and Argonne drive. Later sent back to hospital for the same wound.

ALDWORTH, Don

entered Officer's Training Camp at Presidio, Cal., August 27, 1917; commissioned First Lieutenant; acted as instructor at Camp Lewis until May 1918, and from then until cessation of hostilities was military instructor of Maine; commissioned Captain while at university.*

"In Memory Of" CHRISTIANSON, Conrad J.

private; left Libby for Camp Lewis in May 1918; is reported unofficially to have died of the influenza at training camp in California; had lived in Libby five years and had many friends here, none of whom have heard from him; his clothes and personal effects still here.*

Personally made five enlargements of maps for General Foch Nov. 9th, these maps figuring in the signing of armistice, Nov. 11th.

age 19; Andrew Ellis and Mrs. A. Ellis, father and mother, Libby, Montana; served in Student Army Training Corp, Co. A, Missoula, Montana; discharged Dec. 18, 1918, at Missoula, Montana; private.
 

"In Memory Of" ERDMAN, Harper L.

22 years old. Killed in action at Sector Haumont, October 31st, 1918. He, with other Libby boys, was in the 163rd Infantry and volunteered for transfer the first time the chance came so they could get to the front. Erdman was transferred to Company E, 104th Infantry. Details regarding his death are meager but his Captain wrote to his mother in part as follows; "Sergeant Erdman was killed instantly by an enemy shell on the night of October 31st, 1918, near Bois De Armont Meuse, during the Argonne Offensive. The company was in the midst of a 'relief,' and was under heavy fire. The same shell that killed the Sergeant also wounded his Lieutenant. . . . .He was a very brave and able soldier, with an excellent reputation and record. I wish I could tell you more." Sergeant Erdman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Erdman, live in Libby.

FAIRBANKS, Vernon

age 26; entered service Oct. 1917; Mrs. S. K. Pettitt, mother, Hillyard, Wash.; served in Co. H 163rd Inf., 41st Div. and Co. H. 127th Inf. 32nd Div., over six months active service on different fronts, Alsace-Loraine, Chateau Thierry, Fismes, Soissons and Meuse-Argonne, was in battles on all these fronts, was gassed Aug. 4, near Fismes front, in hospital at Limonges six weeks, after being released was in the Meuse-Argonne offensive and in Army of Occupation five and a half months; discharged May 21, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; corporal.

FARRER, Virgil

age 20, Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Farrer, parents, Libby, Mont.; served in Tank Corps at Raleigh, N. C.; discharged Nov. 22, 1918, at Raleigh, N. C., private.*

FARRIS, John Marcus

age 25; entered service April, 1918; Alice McCone Farris, wife, Billings, Montana; served as Supply Sergeant 19th Co. 166 Depot Brigade, Camp Lewis, Wash., Caded I. C. O. T. S., Camp Pike, Ark., 2nd Lieut. Inf. I. C. O. T. S., Camp Grant, Ill.; discharged Dec. 5, 1918, at Camp Grant, Ill.; Second Lieutenant U. S. A. Served in Butte riot duty, 1914; Mexican border, 1916.
 

"In Memory Of" FEDORCHUK, Private Fred G.

age 21, entered the service from Libby, Montana; nearest relative, Peter Fedorchuk, father, living at Hillyard, Washington. Private Fedorchuck served in Co. F. 163rd Inf. 41st Division, on guard duty around Butte and other places in Montana and when in France was tranferred to Co. D, 16th infantry. He saw service in the battles at Chateau-Thierry, Oise, Bombon, Marne, Soissons, Sedan-Mezierro, Meuse-Argonne. He was gassed in the Oise battle, wounded in the ankle at Soissons and killed on Hill 272, Argonne battle, Oct 9, 1918.

 

Another Libby man who was in Fedorchuk's division states the circumstances of his death as follows; The division was engaged in the capture of this hill, which was an elevation about 200 feet high, and was defended by Prussian Guards. Fedorchuk was in a squad of seven men which charged a machine gun. Only one of the seven reached the gun and captured it, leaving its operator dead. Fedorchuk was one of the six brave lads who fell in the charge. He received three bullet wounds in the head, and died instantly.
 

FERGUSON, Bert

enlisted June, 1918, in Marines, and was sent to a coast Marine camp.*

FIERRO, Jose

entered service March, 1917, served in 2nd Mont. Inf. Mexican Border and later in Butte, Mont., and France. Wounded in second battle of the Marine on July 18, was sent to hospital in France for 3 months. Permantly lost the use of left arm and invalided home; corporal.*

FRANSON, John A.

age 30; entered service Aug. 24, 1918; served in 12th Co. 166 D.B. Co. L. 75th Inf.; discharged Feb. 6, 1919 at Camp Lewis, Wash.; private.

I., from Nov. to Dec., Camp Merritt, N.J., until Dec. 14th 1917, sailed Dec. 15, 1917, landed in Liverpool, England, Dec. 24, 1917, LaCoutrine, France, St. Aignon, France, 104th Inf. 26th Div.; in Toul sector, Alsace-Loraine front Belleau Woods sector, Chateau-Thierry front, battle of Chateau-Thierry; discharged May 7, 1919, at Fort Russell, Wyo.; sergeant. Taken prisoner at Epieds, Chateau-Thierry, July 22, 1918, returned from Rastatt, Germany, Dec. 6, 1918, through Switzerland, back to Vichy, France, Dec. 8, 1918.

HEISE, George W.

age 23; entered service April 18, 1914. Mrs. Elizabeth Trager, Libby, Mont; served in 163d Inf., Butte, Montana., in 1914-1917, with 163d Inf. on Mexican border, 1915, with 163d Inf in France, and 164th Inf. at a training school as instructor; was in Paris, Chattillian, Sea Seine, Baine and number of other French towns; discharged April 2, 1919, Ft Russell, Wyoming; sergeant.

HITCHCOCK, Clarence L.

age 23; B. Hitchcock, father, Spirit Lake, Idaho; served in 15th Co. 20th Engineers; overseas 15 months, 9 months on the front; St. Mihiel, Sept. 1918, six months at Haute, Marne, three months at Roul, two months at Shonias, Voges, four months at Mantes; discharged June 11, 1919, at Camp Lewis; private.

HUNTER, L. Tevis Jr.

age 21; L.T. Hunter, father, Libby, Montana; served in Tank Corps, Raleigh, N. C.; discharged Nov 22, 1918, at Raleigh; private.

HURST, Lester

private; entered service in March, 1917; served in Co. F. 163rd Inf.; on arrival in France was transferred to 16th Inf. First Div., and served in all the battles the division was in.*
 

"In Memory Of" HUSON, Robert David

son of Mrs. Blanche Huson of Libby, Montana, entered the service September 26, 1918l from Libby, Montana, going to the Student Army Training Corps, at Bozeman, Montana. He died of pneumonia at the Deaconess Hospital in Bozeman on Feb 3, 1919. Rank at death was private.

JOHNSTON, Horace C.

age 21; entered service Oct 6, 1917; Mrs Effie Johnston, mother, Hillyard, Wash; served in 116th Field Signal Bat. 41 Div., sailed for France Nov. 26, 1917, transferred to Co. C. 2nd Field Bat. Signal Corps 1st Div; in Toul sector, Cantigny battle, St. Mihiel and Argonne drives; discharged July 23, 1919, from Ft. Douglas, Utah, hospital; first class private, Gassed June 18, 1918 at Cantigny. Sent back to St. Mihiel from hospital. In hospital again in October of same year. With Army of Occupation from Jan. to March, 1919. Invalided back to U. S.
 

"In Memory Of" JOUGHIN, Neil

22 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs H. A. Joughin of Libby, entered the service as a student in the Military, Training school at Missoula, August 14, 1918. He died in the military hospital there Monday morning, October 14, 1918, after an attack of influenza and pneumonia that started five days before. Private Joughin, was born August 13, 1896, at Harrisville, Michigan, and came to Montana with his parents when he was ten years old. The family lived for a time at Missoula, and came to Libby in March 1912. Neil was graduated with high honors from the Libby High School May 29, 1914. He was associated with his father in the meat and packing business when he left to enter the service. Besides his mother and father, he was survived by a sister, Miss Louise Joughin.
