Cabinet Mountains near Troy

This is Montana. Nothing special to look at on your screen, granted, but then, you can't download the smell of honeysuckle and wild grasses onto a disk. You can't transfer a gently rolling sea of life into binary code, nor reach through your monitor and touch the mossy branches of old-growth forest. But I won't burst your bubble. You can imagine. Picture yourself wading through a snow-fed mountain stream to find that perfect photo opportunity - in Montana it's just around the bend. (Stay with me people; it's too hard to keep this simulated reverie up for much longer.) As the waters of the ocean are vast and alone, the mountains of Montana are tall, beautiful, full of a welcome camaraderie that circles you in a warm embrace (claustrophobia). And in the midst of it all, Troy.

Troy is located in Northwestern Montana on the banks of the Kootenai River. Troy has a population of around 953 people. It's elevation is 1889 ft which is the lowest elevation in Montana. This makes the weather here the mildest in Montana.

Troy was only inhabited by Native Americans and trappers until around the year 1889 at which time Montana was becoming a state and they were trying to complete a railroad to Seattle. Troy was formed along this railroad as a place to do maintenance and to change engines as well as crews. This stop provided Troy with quite a good economical state and so by the time the trains no longer needed to stop here, there were mines and logging to keep Troy going. In the present another economic source has been added to the list, tourism.

This is Troy - small and beautiful.

These are the Kootenai Falls, not far from
Troy. It is short walk down to these breathtaking
falls. This is a great place to hike.

This is the Swinging Bridge; it is right
next to Kootenai Falls. Cross this and you'll
find a number of places to hike.

These are the Ross Creek Cedars. This is
a lush and lovely stand of old growth cedar
forest near Troy. We strongly recommend
visiting this place if you are in the area.

These are the Yaak Falls, another one of
Troy's favorite tourist attraction.
