Trained at Camp Lewis. Went overseas with the Machine Gun Company of the 363rd Inf. On September 22nd wrote to his father, saying that he expected to go into battle in a few days.

His captain wrote to his sister, Mrs. A. B. Hill, of Brooklyn, New York, in part as follows; "Their (the enemy) shelling was terrific all that night and the morning of the 29th. At about 12 o'clock they counter-attacked our position. Private Smith was with me and when the enemy started to advance, he with others, grabbed any rifles obtainable and helped drive them back....I selected a new place for company headquarters and left Smith and a bugler to dig the trench they would occupy, with instructions to report when finished. The enemy artillery fire now became quite heavy again. The new trench was finished and Smith was bringing word and had reached within thirty yards of me when a shell exploded beside him, killing him instantly...We carried his body to a less shelled place and that night under cover of darkness uried it in the same grave with one of our officers."
