Tom and
Sook
Ping were married in Canton, China, in 1945 and later fled
communist-dominated China to the British-held island of
Hong Kong. Tom Hum came to Butte in 1943. His wife and
children stayed in Hong Kong.
Kim Chew died in
September 1963. He had hoped to bring his wife—Ming’s
mother—to Butte from Hong Kong, but he died before that hope
could be fulfilled.
Ming was more
successful than his father, but it took him 12 years of
wading through red tape. Having to prove his father’s US
citizenship required not only compiling many affidavits but
also blood tests to establish the father-son relations
between him and his father.
On Chinese New
Year’s Day, February 1, 1965, they reunited for the first
time in Butte. Before that Ming had last seen his wife and
three of his four children in 1953, when he left Hong Kong
and came to the United States. His daughter Mai Mai was born
after he came to Butte.
A Chinese
family destined to become a part of Butte was reunited
at the Butte airport Tuesday,
Chinese New Year’s Day, when Thomas Ming F. Hum, 43, of
116 W. Park, greeted his wife and children.
It was the first meeting between the father and
family since 1953. From left are Mai Lee Hum, 17;
Mai Mai Hum, 12; Sun Min Hum 14; Mrs. Ming Hum, her
husband, and Sun Tai Min Hum, 14.
