1903 Teesdale School

School bells are ringing!
Advertising in 1903 for a new school teacher, one Carbon County district outlined helpful requirements. The teacher must rustle her own kindling to build a fire in the wood stove and adjust the damper, repair broken window glass, mend desks, be fair and just with “dull, unruly pupils” as well as the “bright, obedient scholars.” She must be able to ride horseback, capable of doling out spankings, maintain diplomacy, be a successful fundraiser, record-keeper, law-abiding, and possess “irreproachable moral character” all for $50 per month salary.

Excited students, some barefoot, in front the log-chinked Teesdale School, 1897. Per Richard Thayer. the school sat east of the Reuben Teesdale house about 1/4 mile north of Bridger city limits. The site has been destroyed by highway construction of the road to/from Fromberg.
