between the North and South

 

Civil War Dates:  The Civil War formerly began on 12 April 1861 with the firing upon of Fort Sumter and ended 9 April, 1865 with the Surrender of General Robert E. Lee. It was a military conflict between the Union (The United States of America) and the eleven states known as the Confederate States of America (The Confederacy).

Cause: The principal cause of the war was whether the enslavement of black people in the southern states should continue.

Civil War Timeline: The beginning of what became the Civil War was on November 6, 1860 when Abraham Lincoln was elected sixteenth president of the United States—the first Republican president in the nation.  Lincoln represented a party that opposed the slavery in the territories of the United States.
