Kim Chew
The father of Tom
Ming F. Hum, Kim Chew, as he was widely known, was the first
Chinese boy born in Butte about 1893. He died in Butte on
September 29, 1963. He went to China as a child and returned to
Butte about five years later and had lived in Butte since.
At the time of his death Kim was endeavoring to bring his own
wife, Ming’s mother,
Chu Sun Kung Hum to Butte from Hong Kong.
For several years,
Kim Chew operated the Nanking Noodle Parlor at 20½ South Main.
Before acquiring the Nanking he cooked in Chinese restaurants.
In 1957 he turned the Nanking Noodle Parlor over to his son, Tom
Ming F. Hum.

Obituary
Kim
Chew, 70, operator of the Nanking Noodle Parlor at
20½ S. Main many years, collapsed and died on the
sidewalk near Soldiers Memorial Park on Wyoming
Street just before 7 o’clock Sunday evening.
Death
apparently was due to a heart attack, Coroner Andy
Alleksich said. Firemen used a resuscitator without
success. The body was taken to White’s Funeral Home.
Kim made
his home at 512 S. Wyoming. He turned the Nanking
over to his son, Tommy Hum, about five years ago.
Kim was
born in Butte, but went to China as a child. He
returned a few years later and had lived here since.
He cooked in Chinese restaurants until he acquired
the Nanking.
Survivors besides the son include the widow in Hong
Kong and a brother in Portland.

Services for Chu Sun Kung Hum, 89, of 114
W. Park, will be Tuesday morning at 10 in
Sayatovic Dierterle Funeral Home with the Rev.
Oliver Jones officiating. Burial will be
in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Hum died Friday
afternoon in a local hospital.
She was born in
China January 3, 1891, and came to the United
States in 1967 to live with her son, Tom Ming
Hum, owner and operator of Ming's Restaurant.
She and You Sai Tom
(Kim Chew) married in China. He died in
1963 in Butte, Montana.
Surviving besides
her son are three sisters in China. Friends may
call at the funeral home any time Monday.
