I have in my possession a document signed by then President of the United States Chester A. Arthur, 1881-1884, designating Reuben A. ALLEN, my gggreat grandfather, as Indian agent for the Blackfeet Indians of Montana. It appears that he stayed in Montana after his tenure as Indian agent 1984-86.   I know that he had a son in 1887 (Harry G. ALLEN), and that the son died in Jefferson City on June 14, 1890.  Reuben ALLEN also had a daughter (Nora) whose husband, Andrew STIRLING, died March 7, 1896 in Deer Lodge,   MT. A short note in the paper at that time indicated that Nora's father (Reuben) came over to be with her during her grief.  As to any other information you might be able to provide about any of the above (especially, Reuben),  it would be greatly appreciated. I still don't know where he died, only that it occurred in 1924.   Douglas Stirling WADE, 126 Arbor Drive, Eugene, Oregon 97404

Nov., 1836, IN; d. 1920, near Melrose, MT, was living with the family. The last trace of the three CARLEY sisters consists of two items in the 20 Aug., 1904 Basin Progress and Mining Review. All three girls signed a "Card of Thanks" following their father's funeral; under "Local Items" it states, "Misses Sibyl and Imo CARLEY have gone to Bozeman and will make their home with their grandmother and aunt in that city." The aunt in Bozeman was probably Ella (CARLEY) McKEE but I haven't found anything to indicate that the girls or their grandmother ever actually lived in Bozeman. Help! What happened to the three girls?

We know that Alex STEINMAN came from Finland, also his wife, Mary POLOVAARA. The STEINMAN name is not Finnish, so we felt that the name may have been changed. All the papers that we have are from Jefferson County and Lewis and Clark County, MT. There is a Naturalization paper, a wedding announcement card, and 6 different mining claims. The naturalization paper formally says, District Court, State of Montana, County of Silver Bow, but it also says "presented 2 1896, Lewis and Clark Co., MT". And signed in June of 1894.
