The first European-American settlement in what was to become Hill County
was Fort Assinniboine, first garrisoned by the United States Army in 1879.
Fifteen of the original 104 structures from the fort are still standing.

Hill County was established on February 28, 1912 from Chouteau County.
It was named after James J. Hill, president of the Great Northern Railway
Company, which built the rail line across Montana as part of the Transcontinental
Railroad to the Pacific coast. The county seat is Havre.

Be sure to check Chouteau County if you are looking for someone you
believe may have been in this area before 1912.
All the records, in most cases stayed with the parent county.
