The county of Sweet
Grass (two words) is located in
south central Montana.
Many notable people have passed through Sweet Grass
dating back to William Clark who, in 1806,
followed the Yellowstone River back to rendezvous with
Meriwether Lewis on their journey exploring the west. In
the 1860's, the Bozeman Trail crossed the
miners to gold fields further west and a Dr. Andrew
Hunter began developing a hot spring on what is now the
Sweet Grass - Park County border. Parts of Sweet Grass
were part of the Crow Indian reservation until
The Northern Pacific railroad crossed the
county in the 1880's.
Settlers from Norway began
relocating in the Melville area in the
sheep and mining have all played a role in the
Sweet Grass County became a county in 1895. It was formed
out of parts of Park, Meagher and Yellowstone Counties.
1910-1920 parts of Sweet Grass County were taken to
Stillwater, Wheatland and Golden Valley Counties. It
its present size since 1920.
