northeast montana map Sheridan County is located in the very northeast corner of Montana, bordering North Dakota and Canada. It is approximately 1720 square miles. At statehood, this was part of Dawson County. Valley County was created out of Dawson in 1893 making Glasgow the county seat, until Sheridan County was formed on March 11, 1913. Part of Sheridan County was split off to help form Roosevelt County in 1919, and Daniels County in 1920. (Daniels County was included in the 1920 Sheridan County census.) Plentywood is the county seat.

Three excellent County History books have been written: Sheridan's Daybreak (1970), Sheridan's Daybreak II (1985) and Sheridan's Daybreak III (2005). The history of Sheridan County was transcribed from the original Sheridan's Daybreak by Lynn Skordal and is available (with permission from Mags Aasheim) as a downloadable file on the Sheridan County Daybreakers Genealogical Society page. Histories of several other communities in Sheridan County are also available on their site.
