The Anaconda Company Smelter in Great Falls

The "smaller stack 180 ft. was built first in 1893 by the Boston & Montana Smelter Co. which became part of the Anaconda Co., on June 2, 1915 they blew her up with 2 charges.... (from 1908 to 1915 the 2 stacks stood side by side)... 1908 the construction was started on the largest stack in the world (since there have been taller ones built), first brick laid fall of 1908 , the stack was 506 ft. tall, the flue system was in service June 12, 1909, inside diameter of 74 ft. at bottom and 50 ft. at the top. Total weight 17,000 tons, could withstand winds up to 100 mile per hour ...Sept 18, 1982 after 10:05 a.m. they tried with 600 lbs. of dynamite ripped apart part of the good old stack... so by 5 p.m and 400 lbs. more dynamite finally brought the grand old lady down.... she showed many that she was strong to the end and left many people very sad that more did not appreciate her importance and her loss..... These are the facts from newspaper articles I've collected through the years.....Pat
