Parkinson, William

Capt. William Parkinson, one of the pioneers of the west, and a resident of Boulder, died Friday morning last, at the age of 84.  Capt. Parkinson was at one time captain of a Mississippi steamer, and in his early life was employed in running between St. Louis and New Orleans.  In 1859 he concluded to go west, and reached Colorado across the plains during the same year.  For a time he lived on a ranch near Denver, and during the flour famine of 1861-2 he ran in a train load into Denver and relieved the stringency.  Coming to Montana in 1863, he has lived here since, most of the time in Helena.  He was engaged in mining, principally in this state, and was a member of the first water company in Helena.  For the last few years he has resided in Boulder.  A few days ago he was stricken with paralysis, and the case was pronounced hopeless from the first.  He leaves a wife and three children.  Capt. Parkinson was an uncle of Charles McLure, one of the owners of the Granite Mountain and Bi-Metallic mines.  Mr. McLure arrived at the Boulder from St. Louis yesterday.

Pickering, John D.

John D. Pickering, 89, one of the state's pioneers, who was interested in Montana's agricultural growth at a time when others were digging for gold, died at Boulder, Jan. 10.  Deceased was a native of New Hampshire, born there in 1831.  He came to Montana at the age of 35, and settled in the Jefferson valley where he began the cultivation of one of the first farms and orchards in the state.
