G-H SURNAMES

Gallagher, Mary Anne

Mrs. Mary Anne Gallagher, wife of Thomas Gallagher, of Jefferson county, died last night at 10:30 o'clock, at St. John's Hospital, in this city, after a lingering illness.  Her death was due to heart and kidney troubles that ended in dropsy.  She has been in poor health for many years and six months ago came to the hospital in Helena for treatment.  The funeral will take place from the cathedral after requiem high mass at 9 o'clock to-morrow.  Mrs. Gallagher was 64 years of age, and has been in Montana since the early days.  She was a native of Rahna, county of West Mayo, Ireland, and was married to Thomas Gallagher in New York City, in 1852.  Two children were the fruit of this marriage - a son born in Australia, who died in Illinois, and a daughter, Mary Anne Gallagher, who was born in Illinois, and is at present the wife of Henry J. Reed, of this county.  The deceased was more than an ordinary woman.  She was possessed of a naturally bright mind and a full share of the most admirable traits of the Irish character - sparkling wit, loyalty to her friends, her country and her God, and unbounded generosity being her chief characteristics.  Her charity was wonderful, and many is the poor man and woman who has had reason to rejoice through her acts of kindness and liberality.  She was an industrious woman, a good and faithful wife and a fond mother.  Her loss will be deeply felt by those she leaves behind.
