ALFRED AND MARGARET ADAMS
by Margaret Adams

The Alfred Adams family first came to Roy, Montana in 1961 when Lonnie Adams bought the Twin Sheds ranch from Olaf Rindal. From 1961 to 1966 Alfred and Lonnie summered their cattle there and wintered them at the Stan Gar place on the Missouri River, except for the year when the Ed Boschee family worked for Lonnie, taking care of the cattle.
In August of 1966 Alfred, Margaret, Terry, Kimberly and Kathleen moved to Roy and leased the Twin Sheds from Lonnie.
Terry and Kim started school in the little school house at Bohemian Corner. It lasted about six weeks and then was discontinued and all the students transferred to the Roy school.
Kathleen started her first year at Roy.
In 1969, Karen Marie was born in Lewistown.
The family was involved in many activities during their six years at Roy and have many good memories of 4-H, Rodeo Club, Young Wives Club, Extension Club, Church and community gatherings.
In 1972 the Adams family packed up everything, and moved to Cross Timbers, Missouri. Alfred had always wanted to go back to Oklahoma and live, but the land was almost impossible to buy because of oil lease and prices.
In May Alfred and Jim Rife had made a trip to Oklahoma, Missouri and other states and looked at land and Alfred settled on a place at Buffalo, Mo. The whole family came to look in August. The deal in Buffalo fell through, but we found a place at Cross Timbers. We put money down and went back to Roy to pack our suitcases.
In November we set out for our new home and drove on ice for five days before we got to Missouri. We got kicked off the Interstate in Denver, Colorado for driving too slow. We made it safely though, only with the Lord's help.
Missouri has been good and bad to us, but we like it. Cattle and economic prices have been bad everywhere else too, but we've always had plenty of everything so we have no reason to complain.
Terry does some trucking in the winter and makes his home on the ranch with his family.
Kim and Kathleen are both married and have families and are registered nurses. Karen attends college and works on the ranch.
After the Adams left, Lonnie's son Dale and his family moved onto the place and operated it for several years. Dale now lives in Lewistown and works as a representative for a feed company.

DANNY BIGGS

Danny Biggs lived in Roy only a short time but will be remembered by his classmates of Roy High School. He graduated with the class of 1956.
Danny, the son of Grace McNeil Biggs, lived with his aunt, Winnie Rife, while here and worked for various ranchers in the area.
Danny now lives in Yukon, Idaho with his family. He is a trucker.

TOM AND LILLIAN BYRNE
(Romundstad Ranch or Box Elder Ranch)
by Lillian Byrne

On August 21, 1952, my husband, Tom Byrne who hailed from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and myself, Lillian who hailed from Baker, Montana, arrived at the old Romundstad Ranch, which had been purchased earlier that year in March by Mrs. Vernon Taylor Sr.
When we arrived Mr. Odin Romundstad was still here along with Mrs. Kaaro, who had been cooking for Odin, and Andrew Fergus. They were here for about a week while they moved out the last bit of their furniture.
Tom and I stayed in the main house the first six months while our present house was being built. The only good building on the ranch was the main house, all of the other buildings, corrals and fences were in sad need of repairs.
To date we have been here 36 years. All of our five children were born in the old St. Joseph's Hospital in Lewistown, Montana. They received their eight grade school years at the now closed Fergus School, District #127. They received their high school education at St. Leo's of Lewistown, which is now also closed.
We always had a crew of men around to cook for, it seems. In the earlier years the crews ran from 6 to 11 or 12 daily. We put up our hay then with all small bales which were stacked by hand. Now we put up our hay loose with the Hesston stacking system which has cut down on the man power and crew to cook for.
Up until the middle 60's there was a graveyard here at the ranch, northwest of where our corrals and lower shed is. I loved going there, it was so peaceful and pretty. Will and Hattie Landru watered it and had planted flowers and shrubs there. Beautiful big spruce trees stand where the graveyard was. There must have been about 15-20 grave stones and markers there. A daughter of the Romundstads, Ellen, some of the Fergus family and a baby of Peggy and Bill Landru were among those who were buried there.
Odin Romundstad had Creel's Mortuary come out and move the headstones and graves. The wrought iron fence was also taken down.
The lower shed and the present horse barn, shop, a log house and an old shop are still here and are used daily. The main house is used occasionally in the summer when Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, Jr. and family come for a vacation.
At present Mike, our oldest son, and Mary, his wife (from Hamilton) are making their home here helping us on the ranch. Their three girls: Lalita, Michell and Trisha go to school in Roy. Our daughter, Bonnie, is working in Great Falls; our son, Pat, is going to Professional Physical Therapy school in Missoula; Colleen is working in Spokane and Kathleen is married to Harley Rindal and they live in the Roy area and have two pre-school children, Denny and Darcy.

MELVIN AND EVERETT CAMPBELL

Melvin and Everett Campbell came to the area in 1948 or 49. Their parents had divorced. Their sister, Maxine, had married Ted Doney in 1947 and they moved to the Romundstad Ranch where they were employed. The boys also worked at the Romundstad Ranch when they arrived. Later they worked for Louie Rindal.
Both attended high school in Roy and excelled in sports.
Melvin worked for Lynn Phillips while he attended school, breaking horses and working cattle for him on his place on the Missouri River.
In 1954, Melvin and Margaret (Margie) Zahn were married. They now live in Hood River, Oregon where they raised a family of five.
Everett worked for Cliff Emery shearing sheep for awhile. He married Connie Kurtz, daughter of William Kurtz and Alice (Kurtz) Gar.

They purchased Anton's herd of registered Herefords to go with their own. They crossbred to Red Angus, gradually phasing out of the Herefords. In the late 1960's they started breeding Maine Anjou.
The Clarke's had four children: Barbara, Addie, Alec and April. Barbara now lives in Bozeman; has two children and works in the First Bank.
Addie lives in Irrigan, Oregon; is married, has one stepson and works in a jewelry store in Hermiston.
Alec lives in Lewistown and is employed by Casino Creek Concrete. He married the former Maureen Wright from Moore and they have two children. Alec is the only one of the Clarke children to graduate from Roy High School.
April is married and lives in Cody, Wyoming. She has two children.
John and Meredith sold their ranch in the fall of 1977 and now manage the fair grounds and camp grounds in Tygh Valley, Oregon.

met Bob Fink. We corresponded all summer. He came down to San Antonio, Texas in October of 1953 and we were married. When I got out of the service, we came back to Montana. Bob worked at different jobs until November of 1958 when we bought the ranch from Bob's dad, Alvah.
We adopted Toni and Robin. We had quite a time getting Toni. The guy that came to interview us didn't think a ranch was a place to raise kids and we didn't have any trees. After we finally got Toni, there was no trouble at all getting Robin.
After Bob and I separated, I moved to Lewistown for a year and a half. I then married LeRoy Umstead. We lived on his dad's ranch. After LeRoy's death, I moved into Roy. At present I am secretary for the Roy Fire District, the Indian Butte Grazing Association, and the Roy Water and Sewer Board.

Elnora was known for all the beautiful and unique needlework and craft items she created. Even though her hands became very crippled with arthritis she continued with her hobbies.
The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1985 on June the 3rd.
They have three children: Lois Schultz, who lives in Hinsdale and Charles "Chuck" and Carl who reside in Roy.
Chuck was the first of the family to make Roy his home. He came in 1959 and went to work for the Fish and Wildlife Service; a job he held until 1970. He then worked for Montgomery Construction for a short while before going into business himself; "Chuck Kananen Backhoe".
Chuck and his wife, Joanne, live on the old Ghezzo place, just outside of Roy, which he purchased from Jack and Lois Woodard many years ago. He is an artist, as evidenced by the unique and original hand crafted ornaments and designs that grace the Kananen yard and home.

AGNES WELLS

Agnes and Laurence Wells moved to Roy in July of 1974, coming from Lewistown. Agnes is a sister to Smokey Kucera. Laurence passed away in the mid 80's.
Agnes, known as the garden lady, maintains one of the prettiest yards in Roy; from early spring until late fall a blaze of color from a variety of blooming flowers brightens the west side of town.   Osborne A. "Jack" and Ida LeBrun came to Roy in the spring of 1959 and for the next five years made their home with their daughter, Illa, and family.
Ida was in failing health since the death of her only other child, Eleanor. Unable to do the hard physical labor and beautiful needle work she once so enjoyed, she 'never-the-less' was a very welcome and helpful "mother's helper". She became very close to her grandchildren, especially the two younger ones, Dawn Marie, her only granddaughter, and Ralph, who spent hours with her.
Jack, a retired railroader, thrived on the isolated ranch, enjoying being 'hired man' and taking his two older grandsons, Ken and Jeff, fishing.
The LeBruns left in August of 1964 and returned 'home' to Ashland, Oregon where they had lived for so many years. Ida died in October of 1964 of diabetic complications and cancer. Jack died in November of 1967 following a recurrence of TB which he had contacted in his youth.

DON AND MARGURITE MARSO

Donald and Margurite (Cavanaugh) Marso were married in Elko, Nevada on June 2, 1943. They came to the Roy community after World War II and were actively engaged in ranching in the area for 21 years.
They came to the Central Montana area chiefly because Don's life long friend, Bill Winckler, was here. Both men were raised in Harrold, South Dakota.
Don was interested in cattle and they moved from Lewistown to a small ranch southwest of Black Butte and later to the Butte Ranch (Campain), where they raised cattle, and also ran cattle for Bill, on shares. In 1954-55 they sold that ranch to Links and bought the McDonald place just west of Roy.
Don passed away on February 21, 1969 from cancer. He was 58 years old. He was buried in DeSmet, South Dakota.
Margurite quickly disposed of their land and livestock and moved to South Dakota within 6 months after Don's death. She suffered a stroke and died a little over a year later.

They are originally from Red Lodge. One of the reasons for the Niemis to settle in the Roy area was the fact that cousins of Artie's, Del and Ernie Harrison, were already living here.
B.J. began working at the Roy school in 1977, where she is secretary and also clerk of the school board. Artie farms, ranches and trucks. They are both very active in community affairs; Artie in Rodeo Club and on the rural fire board and B.J. at the school, in Rodeo Club and Extension Club.

We leased, and moved onto the August Ihde Ranch at Cat Creek until 1961 when we moved to our present location at Valentine, on the old Connolly Ranch where we have resided since.
We have four children: Kim, born in 1962, Don born in 1964, Brad born in 1970 and Lura, born in 1973. Kim is married to Robin Lewis of Claresholm, Alberta, Canada and has two children.
Our children have had their schooling at Winnett, Montana which is some few miles closer than Roy, and which ran a school bus past our place.
We have had the Valentine - Roy mail route since moving to the area, 27 years ago.

JACK RITTS

Jack Ritts and his wife Bonnie came to the Roy area about 1980 from the LaCreek Game Refuge in South Dakota. Jack worked for the CMR until his retirement a few years later. He now lives on Paul Holzer's place south of Black Butte.
Bonnie passed away a couple of years after they moved to Roy.

CARL AND CATHERINE SCHOENBERGER

Carl and Catherine Schoenberger came to Roy about 1972, moving to the old John Kahler place, from Lewistown.
Carl is best known as a fisherman; "Catfish Schoenberger", Catherine says with a twinkle in her eyes.
The Schoenbergers met and married at Fairview where she ran a country store and he was engaged in commercial fishing near Sidney. Catherine's father was a homesteader in the Fairview area.
Carl was employed for many years by the Montana Fish and Wildlife; trapping and tagging catfish for them. During his time along the Missouri River he learned just about all the best places to fish, and catch fish he did. About the biggest catfish he ever caught, out of the Missouri weighed 105 pounds and the biggest sturgeon weighed 78 pounds. He caught the catfish when he lived in South Dakota. The biggest catfish he ever caught in this area weighed in at about 30 pounds.
One memorable year when he'd given away all the fish he could and the freezer was still stocked, the couple hosted a fish fry at their place; over 100 attended.
Now 91 years old (1988) Carl and his wife no longer are able to spend time along the river that they love. The last time he was there was in 1987 when Dave and Shannon Gar took him boating; a very pleasurable memory for "Catfish".
Carl originally was from Mobridge, South Dakota. He was born on September 1, 1897. A veteran of WWI, he has a son Richard, who lives in Yankton, South Dakota and a daughter, Melvia (Reise) who lives in Stockton, California.

They then purchased a trailer home which they moved onto the Jordan lot, October 1st of 1969.
Ruth write, "The next year, Ralph Rindal asked Bill to help him with brand inspection as he was too busy to handle it." About a year later the state turned the job over to Bill.
Bill loved his job. He's been a cattle buyer all of his life; he so much enjoyed being with the ranchers whom he grew to know while we were in the store. We were invited to so many branding bees, which was a pleasure. We enjoyed our years in Roy-so much.
Bill passed away in 1984 while on the job. He was 83. After funeral services in Lewistown his remains were shipped to Rapid City, South Dakota where he was buried.
Ruth moved to Rapid City that fall where she has remained.
